Early Earth · 4 billion years ago
What you're walking through
4 billion years ago, Earth was only about half a billion years old, and still hot inside. Volcanoes poured lava over a crust of black rock, and an ocean covered most of the planet, broken by volcanic islands. There was no soil and not a single plant. If life had begun at all, it was too small to see, somewhere in the sea.
The air was mostly nitrogen and carbon dioxide, with no oxygen to breathe. The young Sun shone about a quarter dimmer than today, and the Moon, much closer to Earth, looked far bigger in the sky. Rocks left over from the birth of the solar system still fell as meteors, far more often than now.
Nobody knows exactly what Earth looked like this long ago. The colours of the sky are a guess, and the Moon is drawn even bigger than it looked then, so it stands out.
